  This week I successfully finished another course for my MSc Computer Science. This course introduces some techniques from the domain of artificial intelligence like neural networks, genetic programming, fuzzy logic, rough set theory and chaos theory. I especially liked the material about chaos because of the math involved. The textbook that was used in the course was "Fundamentals of the New Artificial Intelligence" by Toshinori Munakata.

  On Yahoo News I read an interesting article on how math anxiety can cause students to perform poorly on math tests. The article quotes Mark Ashcroft, a psychologist at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas who studies the problem: "Math anxiety, feelings of dread and fear and avoiding math, can sap the brain's limited amount of working capacity, a resource needed to compute difficult math problems."

  I just took and again passed my second exam from the Open University. Exactly one week ago I finished the course Wetenschapsleer, and just one hour ago I finished my exam for the course 'Gegevens en gevolgtrekking'. What it is about is best described by the title of it's textbook 'Understanding scientific reasoning'.

  Wetenschapsleer Philosophy, Study, Uncategorized | (0)

  Yesterday I took (and passed) my very first exam at the Open Universiteit Nederland. The course was called Wetenschapsleer (Philosophy of Science). It's an elective course for Computer Science students, but I'm glad I took it. For studying I used a very good summary I found here.   The MIT isn't the only university that's putting free course materials on the web, the Dutch Open University is doing the same. One of the courses they have published so far is an introduction to (Java) programming. Java isn't the easiest language to start programming in when you're a complete newbie, but the designers of this course have taken an interesting approach. From this course' website you can download a JavaLogo.jar file that contains some classes that allow you to code in a LOGO kind of way. The most famous feature of LOGO is it's "turtle graphics".   Bachelor of Engineering in Mathematics Mathematics, Study, Uncategorized | (0)

  A few months ago I finished the last study activities and yesterday afternoon I received my 'Bachelor of Engineering in Mathematics' degree. As you can imagine I'm very happy. To fill the void, my next goal in life will be a MSc in Computer Science for which I applied to the Dutch Open University. Expect some more updates shortly.
